Our last day on the road before we take a 5 day rest stop in Adelaide.

Port Augusta was very much like the Elvis song playing on the mp3 player when we pulled up (In the Ghetto). A curious mix of 19th century buildings intermixed with new developments. The hard part I guess was seeing the disallusioned youth and elders roaming the town looking for something to do or feel part of. Locals glanced over when ever they saw or heard animated loud voices and wild arm movements.

Next on our list was Port Germein (click for external link). This port town had the longest jetty in the sothern hemisphere (1881) at 1680 meters. A storm a few years back reduced the jetty to 1532 meters. Still a monumental distance.

Port Pirie is the 6th largest town in South Australia (click for external link). This was a classic old town stuck somewhere between the late 1800s and the 1960s. The railway station below is in the midst of a renovation, and not a Channel 9 home building or reno show in site.

And last but not least, Snowtown. With our brains on “no brain” driving, we pulled into Snowtown. We discovered that the town is home to the Snowtown Windfarm. This is one of the blades off one of the wind turbines.

However, I forgot that this town has a very very very grim history.

You can bank on that.
