A day of exploring, digging, underground adventures all mixed up with religious enlightenment.

Bendigo City is a great city entrenched with colonial heritage buildings and renovations in full swing. We had a walk around the city, tasted its beer and food, and snapped away.

A quick walk around the Bendigo Art Gallery yeilded some results. It turned out that the gallery was in the middle of setting up new exhibits, but we did get some snaps off.

Day 52 – Central Deborah Gold Mine

Today, we went gold mining. This involved a short journey to the Central Deborah Gold Mine. We took the cage lift down 60 mtrs to the first level of the mine.

Central Deborah Gold Mine (click for external link) Central Deborah Gold Mine operated from 1939-1954 and during that time employed 357 male miners who successfully extracted almost one ton of gold (929kg) from the ground, which would be worth about $50 million in today’s prices.

The largest shaft is set at 412 mtrs deep. Whilst down there, we walked a small loop that looked at all aspects of the mining. This ranged from drilling, shot blasting, eating and The Thunderbox.

And lastly, a walk around Sacred Heart Cathedral –  one of two cathedrals in Bendigo. We had the cathedral to ourself for most of the time. We were lucky enough to listen to the organist playing away. There was a couple up on the balony, with the organist playing the different pieces of music from the wedding ceremony. A true treat to listen too.
